A woman with short blonde curly hair, smiling, sitting next to a large, abstract sculpture made of black and silver materials, with an intricate display of orange and brown glass butterflies.

South African artist Estella Fransbergen’s breathtaking sculptures celebrate the female form and the natural world. With a background in pottery, Fransbergen became especially interested in the ancient art of raku, a Japanese technique where hand-modeled pottery is fired at a low temperature and rapidly cooled. Fransbergen incorporates raku ceramic pottery—as well as different bronze materials, gold glazes, and traditional patinas—into her sculptural objects, evoking a sense of regality and grace. Glass girl (2019), for example, is a delicate glass sculpture of a woman’s torso, with a web of quartz and Swarovski crystal that resembles a flowing skirt underneath it. The sculpture sits on a crystal base, heightening its etherealness. Fransbergen’s work can be found in the permanent collections of institutions including the Marietta Museum of Art & Whimsy.
